The Lot-et-Garonne department is rich in heritage and history. Its many museums offer a fascinating insight into its past, its traditions and its know-how.

And Villeneuve – Vallée du Lot is no exception, with its rich cultural scene. And with good reason: for several years now, it has been the place to be for cultural events and meetings.

Throughout the year, discover the extensive collection of 19th and 20th century fine art and temporary exhibitions in the Musée de Gajac. Situated on the banks of the River Lot, it has occupied the site of an old mill since 2001 and offers you an uninterrupted view of the river.

Take a trip back in time at Excisum – Eysses archaeological site and museum, where you can discover the life of the Gauls and the Gallo-Roman period through military and everyday objects, architectural elements from the sanctuary and a Gallo-Roman villa.

A museum is not just a place where the past is preserved, it is also a place where the future is prepared.

Gajac Museum VILLENEUVE-SUR-LOT

In 1185, the Abbey of Eysses had a dam built on the River Lot to power a flour mill. The mill levied a toll on all boats passing through the port.

In the 19th century, the mill was converted into an industrial complex housing a bakery, a sawmill and a horn comb-making workshop.

It later became an electricity generating plant in 1945. Bought by the local council in 1981, it now houses the art museum, with a permanent collection of works and temporary exhibitions.

Excisum - Espace muséal d'Eysses VILLENEUVE-SUR-LOT

Located to the north of the town, the Eysses district is home to the ruins of a major archaeological site: the ancient Gallo-Roman settlement of Excisum, dating from the 1st century AD.

All that can be seen of this rich past today is the “Tower”, an imposing vestige of the ancient sanctuary, and the structures of the residential walls and numerous objects testifying to the economic importance of this ancient town.

A visit to the museum gives visitors a better understanding of the history and life of the inhabitants of the Roman town. You’ll also discover remains from the Gallic period and the presence of an exceptional Roman military camp.
