Near Agen and Villeneuve-sur-Lot, Penne-d'Agenais is a medieval stronghold, labeled among the Most Beautiful Villages of France and positioned above the Lot River. Its tumultuous history is written into its built heritage: ramparts and city gates, fortified houses such as the Tour d'Alaric, mansions from the 13th and 16th centuries. Craft workshops and art galleries have been set up along the steep streets, giving this village a new interest. A stroll through Penne-d'Agenais ends at the sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Peyragude, a place of pilgrimage to Compostela, built on the remains of the Château du Roy. The site with its brilliant domes offers a panorama of the hills of the Pays de Serre, its orchards of ente plum trees and the Lot valley. Port-de-Penne, a former river merchant port, is today a stopover for pleasure boaters.
