Our churches remarkable

The architecture of the churches in Lot-et-Garonne is marked by great diversity, reflecting the different eras and influences that have shaped this region of south-western France.

These churches, often inRomanesque or Gothic style, have imposing facades and their thick stone walls, typical of medieval architecture, are often pierced by small windows with coloured stained glass, allowing a subdued and mystical light to filter through.

Some churches have bell towers in the shape of square or octagonal towers. Inside, barrel vaults, side chapels and wooden or carved stone altars create an atmosphere conducive to meditation.

Although these churches have been modified or restored over the centuries, they remain a living testimony to the religious and cultural history of Lot-et-Garonne.

The church, much more than a place of prayer, is a monument where each vault, each sculpture, each window tells a sacred and timeless story.

St Catherine's church VILLENEUVE-SUR-LOT

The church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, begun in the 19th century, was built thanks to the generosity of Georges Leygues, a native of Alexandria and former Minister of the Navy, on the ruins of the former 13th century church. Work was not completed until 1937, the year of its consecration.

Builtin the Romanesque-Byzantine style, it is made entirely of brick, a local material, hence its pink colour. Inside, you can admire the 15th-century stained glass windows from the old church and 5 listed gilded wooden statues, as well as marouflaged paintings.

saint-léger church FONGRAVE

In the 17th century, when the sisters used the parish church of Saint-Léger for their services, they decided to place an altarpiece in the choir.

A monumental piece of furniture, the altarpiece is 12 metres high. Its sculpted decoration is characteristic of the Baroque style. Richly decorated, the altarpiece is an architectural structure that draws the faithful’s gaze towards the choir and contributes to the liturgy.

A statue of Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Peter stands on either side of the altarpiece. In the centre, the painting depicts the Adoration of the Magi, inspired by Rubens’ Adoration of the Magi.

notre-dame church BIAS

Built in the 12th century, Notre-Dame church has become a regional heritage landmark.

The church underwent a complete overhaul of the interior painting, with the bold use of three colours evoking three theological virtues: red (Charity), green (Hope) and blue (Faith).

A renowned local artist, François Peltier, created a Way of the Cross based on contemporary art. This original work, unique in Aquitaine, reproduces the fourteen stations in relief and with expressive figures.

saint-pierre saint-paul church CASSENEUIL

Saint-Pierre Saint-Paul church was rebuilt in the second half of the 13th century following the crusade against the Albigensians.

The murals inside the building are remarkable. Philosophers, prophets and angels are depicted, while Christ in glory is enthroned in the centre.

Two figures can be seen on the north wall of the north aisle: Jean de Pellegrue and his mother Françoise Valens, heiress to the seigneury of Casseneuil. The painted cycle was made possible by the donors.

notre-dame church HAUTEFAGE-LA-TOUR

Originally a simple devotional chapel built over a fountain reputed since the Middle Ages for its miraculous virtues, particularly in curing sterility, Notre-Dame d’Hautefage was built towards the end of the 15th century.

Its original structure changed over the centuries. Its history was punctuated by a series of works in particularly different styles.

Notre-Dame has a rectangular floor plan ending in a five-sided chevet. The nave is made up of two almost square bays, vaulted over ribbed ceilings. The chancel ends in a canted apse. It has been listed as a Historic Monument since 17 May 1921.
